New Cross is thriving and multicultural, hugely historical and with excellent access to the gateway areas of Southeast London.
It's fantastically well provided for in terms of high class education, certainly more than most boroughs of its kind. It's home to one of the most well known of city schools, Haberdashers Askes, Addey and Stanhope School, and of course the excellent Goldsmiths College. Other schools in the area provide great education, and the district is within the catchment of a huge variety of schools of all levels. It remains one of the best inner city boroughs for families because of this.
The area is also excellent for nightlife and eating, with splendid restaurants opposite Goldsmiths, as well as cheaper eats elsewhere.
New Cross doesn't seem like a countryfied area but it provides access (within a few minutes' walk) of some of Southeast London's nicest open spaces. It has its own conservation area around the lovely Telegraph Hill, and Brockley's beautiful Hilly Fields is also very close.
Great houses are everywhere you look here. There are very large, well apportioned and designed Victorian houses lining the largely quiet sidestreets. In the countryfied areas around the conservation areas there are also some absolutely lovely Victorian villas which offer the most desirable properties around here. There are also blocks of flats, as well as some excellent opportunities for development in many areas as large family homes can be found for good prices if in need of a quick makeover. |
