Limehouse is one of the best-developed and most traditional stepping stones for the City and Docklands workers looking for convenience and a high standard of living on the river, has been into the 'plush urban living' habit longer than anywhere else in the capital.
It's a tangle of seriously urban streets, although there are great resources which make it more than merely a jungle of buildings - there's an excellent sports centre, several gardens, and of course superb dining and drinking options around the area, particularly overlooking the river.
Though there are still businesses in the area, Limehouse is mostly high-end residential space, mostly for individuals or couples: this isn't really a popular place for families.
Wapping nearby, has huge warehouses and factories that line these streets (some with evocative names reminiscent of London's trading past - Cinnamon Street, in particular, Tobacco Dock, Rum Close, Brewhouse Lane) were swiftly turned into at times truly opulent apartments, and it is these that Wapping is known for. These are plush, very desirable apartments, superbly fitted and perfect for the high-living, demanding and well heeled bankers, traders and lawyers who are their target market. The most desirable, of course, are those directly on the river.
